Why cantilever bases need model-specific ballast
Leverage, not just weight
A 3 m canopy hanging from an offset arm loads the base with far more turning force than the same canopy on a center pole. Center-pole base weights are not transferable — use the base the frame was designed for.
Cross base with plates, or one-piece
Two routes dominate: a cross base with separate weight plates, which is easier to ship and reposition, or a single heavy unit such as the 360 kg welded marble base for a permanent installation.
Water-filled bases ship empty
A water filled umbrella base travels as a few kilos of HDPE and gains its working weight on site. A 138 L shell filled with water is roughly 138 kg — and sand gives more ballast again in the same shell.
Drain before freezing weather
Water-fillable shells must be drained before winter in freezing climates. The most common damage we see on roof terraces is a cracked shell, not fabric failure.
Filling, mounting and site checks
- Fill level matters — a half-filled HDPE base performs like a light base; agree the fill material (water or sand) in the quotation so the expected ballast is on record.
- Flat, solid surface — a base that rocks on a decking gap loses much of its effective weight. Check the slab, planter or deck continuity before installation.
- Repositioning — choose a handled or wheeled model where the terrace layout changes seasonally, and keep one spare fill point available on site.
- Pole and adapter fit — confirm the holder diameter and locking mechanism against the side pole or cantilever mast before ordering.

Can I use a center pole base under a cantilever umbrella?
No. The turning force from an offset canopy is much higher than from a directly supported one. Use a cantilever-specific base — typically a cross base with plates or a 160–360 kg one-piece unit.
Is a water filled umbrella base as stable as a concrete or marble base?
Once filled correctly, a water-filled base delivers the rated ballast for the model and is equivalent in performance. The two practical differences are that ballast depends on the user filling it properly, and the shell must be drained before freezing temperatures.
How much base weight does a cantilever umbrella need?
